Gaining Ground’s Response to the Pandemic

Offering tennis racket stringing with his company known as Strings Attached, Ethan Bondick recently graduated from the Noble & Greenough School. Community involved, Ethan Bondick has volunteered with organizations such as Gaining Ground.

As a registered nonprofit, Gaining Ground relies on donations and volunteers to plant and grow tens of thousands of pounds of organic produce to give to those in need. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic forcing the organization to halt its volunteer program in mid-March, it still managed to grow 60 percent more produce than during the previous April.

Gaining Ground recently announced that it did not plan on resuming its volunteer program this year. However, the organization continues to seek to meet the needs of those facing food insecurity, a number that has grown from about 9 percent to 38 percent in the wake of the pandemic.

While working without volunteers, Gaining Ground depends on its farm staff who bring a combined total of 42 years of experience to the work, including its nonprofit office staff. These staff members continue the organization’s cultivation of organic fruits and vegetables through the generosity of donors.
